The Upgrade Game in Tahiti Is Real — If You Know the Rules
An overwater bungalow at the Four Seasons Bora Bora costs $2,500-4,000/night at rack rate. A garden bungalow at the same resort? $800-1,200. That's a massive price gap for what is essentially the same resort experience with a different view. The good news: upgrades happen more often than you'd think, and there are proven strategies to increase your chances dramatically.
After booking hundreds of French Polynesian resort stays, I've learned exactly which levers to pull. Some of these strategies are well-known; others are insider tricks that most travel blogs won't share.

Resort-Specific Tips
Different properties have different upgrade cultures.
- Four Seasons Bora Bora — loyalty program members (Four Seasons Preferred Partner through agents) get prioritized. The jump from beach to overwater is their most common upgrade
- Conrad Bora Bora (Hilton) — Hilton Honors Diamond members have excellent upgrade odds. Use the Hilton Aspire credit card for automatic Diamond status. Points bookings are upgradeable too
- Hilton Moorea — one of the best value upgrade opportunities in French Polynesia. Garden bure to overwater is often just $150-200/night more, or free with status
- InterContinental Thalasso Bora Bora — IHG One Rewards members can request upgrades at booking. Their overwater villas with glass floor panels are the most Instagrammed in Tahiti
- Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts — smaller property where personal relationships matter most. Agent-booked clients consistently get better treatment than OTA bookings
- St. Regis Bora Bora — Marriott Bonvoy Platinum/Titanium members get suite upgrades when available. Their Royal Overwater Villa is the ultimate upgrade prize
Timing and Booking Tricks
When and how you book matters as much as where.
- •Check in on a Tuesday or Wednesday — these are the lowest-occupancy days and upgrades are most likely when the hotel isn't full
- •Arrive in the afternoon (not early morning) — by 2-3pm, the front desk knows exactly which rooms are available for upgrading
- •Book 4-6 months out for the best base rates, then let your agent work the upgrade angle closer to arrival
- •Combine resort loyalty status with a travel agent booking — this is the most powerful combination for upgrades
- •If paying rack rate, politely ask about upgrade pricing at check-in — resorts sometimes offer paid upgrades at 30-50% below the rate card difference
- •Stay 5+ nights — longer stays give resorts more incentive to keep you happy with an upgrade
